title: 4013: Event stream limit reached. | API Docs
description: This key already holds the maximum number of open event streams.
---

**HTTP status:** `429`.

Each API key may hold a limited number of event streams open at once, and this request would open one more. No stream was opened. A slot frees when one of the key’s open streams closes; a stream whose client went away without closing it is released within about one heartbeat. The response carries Retry-After, mirrored in error.retry\_after, as a reconnect pace rather than a promise that a slot will be free.

## Troubleshooting

- Reuse one stream per consumer rather than opening a new stream per task, and close streams you no longer read.
- Make sure reconnect logic closes the old connection before opening a new one.
